  • A prolific and revered composer, Marvin (1944-2012) won nearly every major industry award: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, and three Golden Globe awards, as well as a shared Pulitzer Prize for A Chorus Line that was awarded to the show’s writing and production team. He and composer Richard Rodgers are the only “PEGOT” (EGOT + Pulitzer) winners to date.

    In addition to his illustrious theatre work, Marvin’s contributions to the world of film were extraordinary, creating music for more than 40 films and receiving Oscars for his remarkable adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music in The Sting and his classic score and song for Sydney Pollack’s The Way We Were. His scores included work for renowned filmmakers Woody Allen, Robert Redford, and Steven Soderbergh, and even wrote the James Bond title song “Nobody Does It Better” for The Spy Who Loved Me.

    Marvin served as a Musical Director and arranger for Barbra Streisand’s 1994 tour and television special, Barbra Streisand: The Concert. He also held the position of principal pops conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony and Pops, Seattle Symphony, San Diego Symphony, The Buffalo Philharmonic, and The National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC. At the time of his death in 2012, Marvin was preparing to assume responsibilities as Principal Pops Conductor for The Philadelphia Orchestra.

    He was a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music as well as Queens College with whom the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards are proud to partner.
